A carbon steel bolt is a type of fastener made from steel that contains carbon up to 2.1% of its weight. Carbon steel bolts are commonly used in construction, manufacturing, automotive, and infrastructure industries.
The definition of Carbon steel is any steel that contains carbon content up to 2.1% of its weight. As the carbon content increases, the Carbon Steel Bolt tends to become much harder & would have increased strength - after being processed by heat treatment. However, the steel becomes less ductile. Regardless of the heat treatment performed on the carbon steel alloys, a higher content of carbon in the material reduces weldability in Carbon Steel Fasteners, while also effectively lowering the Bolts melting point. Most Carbon Steel Stud Bolts are usually relatively soft. They also exhibit low strength. However, low carbon steel is highly pliable. High ductility is a property that makes the material excellent for machining & welding. The absence of different elements - used as alloyants, as opposed to other classes of steels is what contributes to the nuts and bolts dubbed as low-cost Bolts. Carbon Steel Bolts and Nuts grades fall into three different categories based on the content of carbon that is Low, medium, and high carbon steel.

Cost-Effectiveness: These Carbon Steel Bolts are more economical compared to other materials, making them a preferred choice for various applications.
Versatility: The availability of different sizes and coatings allows these Carbon Steel Bolts to adapt to different environments, ensuring optimal performance.
Easy Installation: The threaded ends design make installation quick and straightforward, reducing assembly time and costs.
Corrosion Resistance: With appropriate coatings or plating, Carbon Steel Bolts can exhibit excellent resistance to corrosion, extending their service life.
Types of Carbon Steel Bolt

T Head Bolt
A T-head bolt is a fastener that has a T-shaped head and a nut on one end. The head of a T-head bolt can be square or rectangular, and it sits flush or below the surface of the surrounding material. T-head bolts are usually made from low carbon steel or stainless steel.
T-head bolts are used to join objects that have a T-shaped slot. They are designed to be tightened with a wrench or ratchet. T-head bolts can be thin and flat, or thick. Thin T-head bolts are usually M6, M8, or M16, while thick T-head bolts are usually M6 to M24. Thick T-head bolts are used in heavy structures, automobiles, and lift facilities.
T-head bolts are used in construction and manufacturing structures, such as heavy machinery, truckloads, industries, and other mechanical works. They provide a tight fastening and high strength to objects.
Roof Bolt
Roof bolting is a method of supporting the roof and ground in underground mines. It involves inserting metal rods into drilled holes in the mine roof to prevent collapse.
Roof Bolts are a type of bolt that is manufactured with a large flat head, sometimes known as a mushroom head, making them ideal for affixing to thin materials. The wide surface area of their head allows the holding force of the bolt to be spread further than a standard bolt, meaning a secure holding that is less likely to damage the material it is affixed to when under stress.
The roof bolts are typically fully threaded, complementing their suitability for thin material applications. Normally supplied with a square nut for easy tightening, these bolts are as versatile as they are easy to use, with wide slots on the head that can accommodate both flat-head and cross-head screwdrivers. Uses for Roofing Bolts - Though called roof bolts, these bolts are in fact used for a wide array of different purposes and are commonly employed when joining metal surfaces.
Insulator Stud Set
An insulator stud set is a rigid insulator that is mounted on a supporting structure using a stud or bolts. The insulator is made of one or more pieces of insulating material that are permanently attached to a metal base. The insulator may also have a cap.
Hex Flange Bolt
A hex flange bolt is a one-piece head bolt with a flat surface and an externally threaded body. They are also known as flange bolts, frame bolts, and hexagon flange bolts.
Hex flange bolts have a built-in washer and an externally threaded body. The flange distributes the load evenly between the different joints of the structure being fastened. This eliminates the need for a washer and gives higher flexibility in a wide range of operations.
Guard Rail Bolt
Guardrail bolts are safety fasteners used in highway barriers and safety fences. They are typically hot dip galvanized for corrosion resistance.
Guardrail bolts have a round domed head and an oval shoulder under the head to help locate the bolt while tightening. They are 5/8" in diameter and come in various lengths.
Guardrail screws are an important part of the guardrail system and consist of three parts: bolts, washers, and nuts.
Steel Carriage Bolt
Steel Carriage Bolts are a type of threaded fastener that can be used to connect unthreaded objects. They have a broad, shallow round head and a square neck under the head. The square neck acts as a locking device when inserted into a pre-drilled hole, preventing the head from turning as a nut is tightened.
Steel Carriage Bolts can be made from a variety of materials, including stainless steel, hot dipped galvanized steel, and grades 2 and 5 steel. Stainless steel is a popular choice because it provides excellent corrosion resistance, strength, and durability over long periods of time. Hot dipped galvanized steel is a good choice for exterior applications because it provides a decent amount of corrosion resistance. Common finishes for steel carriage bolts include zinc plating for Grade 5 and zinc plating and hot dip galvanizing for Grade 2.
Flat Head Hex Socket Screw
A flat head hex socket screw, also known as a countersunk socket screw, is a high-strength fastener with a low profile flat head. The head is designed to sit flush with its surface or just below.
Flat head hex socket screws have an internal hex or Allen drive style and are fully threaded. They are typically made from industrial quality alloys like carbon steel and stainless steel.
Round Head Hex Socket Screw
A round head hex socket screw, also known as a button head socket cap screw, has a rounded head and a hexagonal drive. The head is slightly rounded and larger than a standard cap screw, with a lower head height and larger diameter than a hexagon socket head cap screw.
Round head hex socket screws are low-profile, with no sharp or pointed edges. They are high strength fasteners with a wide bearing surface head. They are used in mechanical applications and can be made from plain, zinc plated, or stainless steel.
Carbon steel bolt grades are modified based on manufacturing standards and specific application requirements. There are various types of carbon steel bolt grades, but the following are the most common:
Grade 2 - Low Carbon Steel
Grade 2 carbon steel bolts have the lowest carbon content and are the most basic type with a minimum tensile strength of 55,000 psi and a minimum yield strength of 57,000 psi. This grade is typically used for general purposes like woodworking, construction, and automotive assembly where high strength is not required.
Grade 5 - Medium Carbon Steel
This grade of carbon steel bolts contains a moderate amount of carbon, making them slightly stronger than Grade 2. It has a minimum tensile strength of 85,000 psi and a minimum yield strength of 92,000 psi. Grade 5 carbon steel bolts are often heat-treated to increase their hardness and tensile strength, making them suitable for mechanical, automotive components, and structural assembly.
Grade 8 - High Carbon Steel
Grade 8 carbon steel bolts contain a high carbon content and are suitable for high-demanding applications in various fields. They have a minimum tensile strength of 120,000 psi and a minimum yield strength of 130,000 psi. This grade undergoes various heat-treatment processes to achieve excellent tensile strength and hardness. They are typically used in heavy machinery and high-strength applications in structural assembly.

Here are some maintenance tips for carbon steel bolts:
Oil lightly: Before storing the carbon steel bolt each day, lightly oil it.
Brush and grease: Brush and grease the carbon steel bolts if possible.
Use a zinc flake coating: Apply a zinc flake coating, such as Delta Protekt or Delta-Tone, to protect the steel bolts and washers.
Remove rust: If rust does appear, use fine steel wool wet with oil to remove it before it worsens.
Lubricate threads: Lubricate the threads of the bolt and nut before and after assembly and removal to prevent corrosion and breaking.
Use lacquer: Spray lacquer on the carbon steel bolts to repel water and resist water from sitting on the steel.
