Screws and bolts are well-known fasteners, primarily used in the manufacturing industry. They each have different functions, shapes, and appearances. Let's explore the differences between bolts, screws, and studs.

 

A screw can be defined as a bevel wrapped around a nail, characterized by spiral ridges and threads along its length. It also has a helix, which allows you to turn the screw with a screwdriver.Under the head is a shank that can be fully or partially threaded. The threads are either cylindrical or conical in shape. The distance from the top of one thread to the next is called the pitch. The most common types of screws used in the manufacturing industry are concrete screws, set screws, and drywall screws.The strength of a screw depends on the width of the threads and the distance between them. However, the greater the number of threads, the more turns are required to tighten the screw. Additionally, the greater the distance between the threads, the greater the force required to apply to the tool when turning.

Screws are used in a wide variety of applications, from furniture to motorcycles, from air conditioners to children's remote-controlled cars.

 

A bolt is a threaded external fastener inserted into a hole in an assembled component. It is typically designed to be tightened or loosened with a nut. It has a uniform circular cross-section and a helical thread structure with a finer pitch than screws and studs. The bolt and nut work together to tighten where torque is applied. Some common bolts are carriage bolts, plow bolts, and track bolts.

 

A stud is a headless fastener with external threads on both sides. In other words, one end of the stud connects to a tapered section and the other to a standard nut.Unlike screws and bolts, studs do not have a head that requires tightening. When installing a bolt, no external force is required and it can be installed manually. There are three main types of studs: fully threaded studs, threaded-end studs, and double-ended studs. Depending on the application, bolts are made of various materials to meet the operational requirements. Because stud threads are not stretched, they can produce repeatable clamping force and provide a longer service life.
