The Difference Between Machine Screws And Self Tapping Screws

Machine threads mainly include metric standards, American standards, and imperial standards. The thread angle of metric standards and American standards is 60 degrees, and the inch standard is 55 degrees. The metric standard is expressed in pitch, and the American and Imperial standards are expressed in threads per inch. The threads of self-tapping screws are divided into coarse threads and fine threads, generally called type A and type AB. Most of them use AB threads. Self-tapping screws do not need to match internal threads, they only need to have prefabricated holes, and matching threads are automatically generated when they are tapped, which is called thread forming.
Another difference is the different materials, production processes, and applications. Machine screws are generally made of 1008 steel and do not require heat treatment. They are generally used in conjunction with nuts in situations where strength requirements are not high. Self-tapping screws are generally made of 1022 steel and must be heat treated. They are mainly used on thin steel plates and aluminum, and can also be used on wood.
